Birmingham, Session II

Just posted a story on Darrin Horn. Either go to our home page or hit this link: http://southcarolina.rivals.com//content.asp?CID=866668
A story on the women's team, a notebook and a blog wrapping up the day to come ... (I can see you all quivering with anticipation).
More notes and observations:
-- Vanderbilt's A.J. Ogilvy is one of the lankiest players I've seen in a while. He looked like a weathervane in a suit. He told me he added about five pounds in the offseason.
I said, "Where? In your Adam's apple?"
-- Hats off to Alabama point guard Ronald (Fistful Of) Steele, who had both knees scoped last year and had the left one re-scoped a few months after the original surgery. He had to redshirt last year but came back this year and was still a preseason second-team All-SEC pick.
-- Is it just me or does Mississippi State coach Rick Stansbury look just a little too much like the crooked Indian agent from "Tales of Wells Fargo?" (Thanks, Lewis).
-- Some random stats to throw at you: The SEC has had the last two women's national champions (Tennessee) and two of the last three men's champions (Florida, before Kansas won last year). The SEC is first among all conferences in NCAA tournament wins over the past six years and every league team has made the tournament at least once during the same period. Of 27 women's Final Fours, the SEC has played in 25. And perhaps most impressive: Former SEC athletes won 51 medals at the Olympics over the summer, which would have placed fourth in the world in medal count.
-- At one point, Alabama coach Mark Gottfried was (deservedly) the highest-paid coach on campus. And then Bear Bryant reached down (or up, depending on your point of view), and said, "I do not approve."
Hey, hoops is just something to fill in the gaps between the bowl game and Signing Day.
