Eat your heart out, Jack Kerouac

-------- OASIS
Got my heart recharged in Atlanta over the bye week, so a random musing or two before getting into USC-Tennessee and USC Hoops – The Horn Era Begins.
SOMEWHERE ON I-85 – A tape recorder and a 44-ounce Dr. Pepper are your best friends. Only with the recorder can I catch all the overflow of cascading thought that runs through my brain, occasionally interrupting the constant soundtrack.
“On the road again … I just can’t wait to get on the road again …”
One thing you must know about Atlanta traffic – you will always be behind the slowest person in any of the six lanes.
Talking to the Head Ball Coach on his usual Sunday teleconference. Not much to report today. Some small items about Jared Cook’s foot and Spurrier watching the Alabama-Tennessee and Kentucky-Florida games.
Very good move extending Ellis Johnson’s contract. Smart thing to do after the job he’s done.
Oh, Spurrier also says Stephen Garcia is the No. 1 quarterback right now. Boy, I never would have guessed.
“I’m a troublemaker … Never been a faker … Doing things my own way …”
Passing by Royston, Ga., home of Ty Cobb. Great player, terrible movie.
“Welcome back … Your dreams were your ticket out … ”
There’s the “Welcome to South Carolina” sign and beyond it, Highway 11 going to Walhalla. Good barbecue up in this area. I spent three months up here in the great summer of ’99, working for the Seneca newspaper.
After three months of covering all news from the town of Westminster, I came to the conclusion – “News doesn’t get to do free games.”
“Soy un perdedor … I’m a loser, baby … ”
I was stricken with an uncontrollable 20-minute fit of laughing, the guffaws reaching a crescendo that almost had me merging my trusty Corolla with a KLLM 18-wheeler. It was right around the Clemson exit …
“The times they are a-changin’ … ”
I keep seeing billboards for politicians all along the highway and several cars are sporting bumper stickers. How funny would it be if John McCain adopted the “Change” slogan too, considering that no matter who wins, there’s going to be a change in the White House?
“Spread your wings and fly away … no one can hold you back now … ”
The Big Peach is on my left and Sidney Rice is on my mind.
“It’s been a whole lot easier without her face around … ”
For some reason, although I’m halfway between Kings Mountain and York, the Spin Doctors came on and I immediately thought of USC basketball.
“We are family … ”
Passing through York, home of the Boyd brothers, each a fine man and a great coach. They’ve churned out some USC recruits over the years – J.R. gave the Gamecocks John Abraham from Lamar High School, Dean gave them Syvelle Newton from Marlboro County and Steve gave them Spencer Lanning from York Comprehensive.
“There’s a blue light … ”
That’s not Mazzy Star. That’s a state trooper.
Damn.
