David Cloninger's Blog - Who Else?

Mid-day break

posted by David Cloninger, 10/22/2008 01:04:00 PM

OK, got all of USC's representatives and I must say, Devan Downey could hold his own with the suits of the first session. He was wearing a white coat and pants and looked like he could still flip the ball off a Greyhound bus and into the hoop.

Some quick notes and observations:

-- Just finished talking with Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl. Filled up two notepads and half of another. That guy is awesome.

-- Tennessee women's coach Pat Summitt is only 17 wins away from 1,000 for her career. That makes her the winningest coach, period. And she's only 56.

-- Quick breakdowns of rule changes (there will be more later): The 3-point line, after a year of experimenting during exhibitions and such, is now officially a foot further back at 20 feet, 9 inches. The in-lines will have to have a six-feet bare space where no non-playing personnel is allowed, which could affect placement of seats, cheerleaders, photographers, etc. at Colonial Life Arena. Technical fouls are now divided into two categories, Class A and Class B. Combinations for ejections are two As, an A and two Bs or three Bs. Say that three times real fast.

-- Tennessee's Wayne Chism looked like he stepped out of "American Gangster." Black suit, black shirt, white silk tie. All he needed was a fedora and a tommy gun.

-- The best thing about covering SEC events -- all the free Dr. Pepper you can drink.

-- Another media guide note: Georgia's men's guide has the phrase "4 Games, 3 Days, 2 OTs, 1 champion" on the back about the Bulldogs' miraculous run through the SEC tournament last year. Really the best thing about college basketball -- no matter how lousy your team is, if you can just put it together for four days in March, you're going dancing.

-- Still to come today: Interviews with reps from Alabama, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt, plus stories on Darrin Horn and Dawn Staley. A notebook will be added wrapping up other league business. Tomorrow, stories on Devan Downey and Demetress Adams.
