David Cloninger's Blog - Who Else?

Random thoughts and observations

posted by David Cloninger, 10/17/2008 09:40:00 AM

From Thursday's practice and points west ...

- Long snapper Charles "C.D" Turner showed off a pretty good arm while the special-teamers were running a few inspired 5-on-5 drills before practice. I believe it was Walker Inabinet he hit with a crossing pattern. I thought I saw a Clemson assistant coach taking notes in the bushes -- we all know how their quarterback situation is going right now.

- God, I hate Fair Week. Screwed-up parking, screwed-up traffic, the knowledge of shortcuts in and around Williams-Brice Stadium gained from years on the beat wiped away in a flash of fried dough. If the SEC just happens to read this, please, I beg you, make all future schedules have two straight road games and a bye during the middle of October.

- Who would win in a cage match -- Willy Korn or Stephen Garcia?

- Talking with special teams coach Ray Rychleski the other day, I asked him about punter Spencer Lanning. Specifically, if Lanning had to, could he do what Ryan Succop does?

Rychleski said Lanning's top mark in practice has been about 47 yards but reiterated that Succop was the No. 1 guy (much like Jack Napier/Bob in "Batman.") Succop's struggles last week were apparently stressful enough to him that he didn't participate in the special-team mini-football game before practice -- he stayed over on the side, stretching in the shade of the extendable video tower.

- Gerrod Sinclair could pass for Ko Simpson if you took just a mug shot.

- I leafed back through the history books trying to find what the reaction was that day in 1992 when Steve Taneyhill started his first game. He seems to be the guy brought up most often when discussing Garcia.

All I could find were the stats and game stories. I wonder if Taneyhill got the ovation Garcia's sure to get when he jogs out there tomorrow ...

- The basketball teams are holding a "block party" for students tonight in front of the Russell House. They'll have a couple of layup drills and such before they go over to Colonial Life Arena for the real practices (closed to the public). Of course it's not going to overcome the football hoopla, but I'm just letting you know because the season is upon us.

- Does anyone know if LSU brings that live tiger of theirs on the road? I wouldn't think they would, but then again, I thought all college football fans had a degree of sense about them until I had to do a few man-on-the-street stories from Clemson.

Seems like it'd be a hefty expense, but I seem to recall Colorado bringing its live buffalo with it on a road trip recently.
