-------- CRASH TEST DUMMIES
The fearless Paul Collins and I are in Birmingham, Ala., getting ready to bring you the first-ever GamecockCentral.com coverage of SEC (Hoops) Media Days. We'll be shooting updates to the site throughout Wednesday and Thursday as the 24 men's and women's coaches and several players from the league voice their thoughts about the upcoming season.
Yes, there are other sports beside football ...
All right, USC fans, here's the schedule. Coaches Darrin Horn and Dawn Staley and their players are set to speak second tomorrow, between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Eastern time.
Not sure how they're going to do the guys and the girls, if it's at the same time or back-to-back. But as soon as Auburn's representatives leave the stage, USC steps in.
The SEC's Web site says point guard Devan Downey and forward Dominique Archie, plus women's players Demetress Adams and Brionna Dickerson, are the players who were chosen to accompany their coaches. On Media Day, I was told by sports information that it would be Downey and Branden Conrad, so I guess we'll find out what happened there tomorrow.
If you're interested, the schedule is as follows (in Eastern time): 11:30-1:30 Wednesday: Auburn, USC, Tennessee (no word if Bruce Pearl will wear a shirt). 3-5 Wednesday: Alabama, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt. 10-noon Thursday: Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss. Noon-2 Thursday: Arkansas, Florida, LSU.
Horn and LSU's Trent Johnson are the new coaches on the men's side. All but three of the media's preseason All-SEC team (Florida's Nick Calathes, LSU's Marcus Thornton and Tasmin Mitchell) are listed as player representatives who will be here on the SEC's Web site.
I'm hoping Downey and Archie/Conrad will challenge the rest of the league in their choice of clothes. The suits and bling at these events is worth a sheaf of stories by themselves.
Nov. 7 (exhibition) and Nov. 14 (first game) are just around the corner ...
