Muldrow still out, but excitement high

A few quick notes from basketball practice today ...

Our full season preview is already on GamecockCentral.com and a story on Devan Downey will appear tomorrow morning, but coach Darrin Horn spoke on Thursday afternoon and had a few things to say.

The highlights:

-- Sam Muldrow is still out to concentrate on academic issues and will not play tomorrow night. Horn said he will announce Muldrow's status when there is a change in it, so it could be day-to-day or it could be a while. A logical guess would be that Muldrow will also miss Sunday's game hosting Winthrop, but that's just a guess.

-- Mike Holmes will start against Jacksonville State after missing the exhibition win over Kentucky Wesleyan for violation of team rules. Holmes is expected to join a starting five of Downey, Zam Fredrick, Brandis Raley-Ross and Dominique Archie.

-- Horn said that obviously, USC's offense needs a lot of work, but he was pleased to see the effort provided by the Gamecocks in attempting to correct it. Having Holmes back on the block should help and even without him against Kentucky Wesleyan, the Gamecocks matched Horn's desired 75 points. While that quota isn't necessary for every game, Horn said it'd be a total he'd like to see.

-- Archie and Evka Baniulis each said the team was concentrating more on defense than scoring, since slowing down the opponent is going to be a key part of this year's team. Baniulis has begun working on his inside game more after a year of being a strictly 3-point shooter, and it's a natural return for him. Baniulis said he didn't shoot the 3 until he came to America.

-- Each of the players who spoke, Horn and the team's attitude at the beginning of practice displayed a lot of enthusiasm. After practicing/scrimmaging/conditioning since April 1, it's finally time to start playing the real games.

It was a quick presser and practice began soon after. I had to split for football practice but as I said, tune into GamecockCentral.com tomorrow morning for the complete story on Downey and a preview box for tomorrow's game.

Hope to see everyone that's not going to Gainesville at Colonial Life Arena tomorrow.
