Musical Quarterbacks, Round CLXIV

It's called 'Switch' (switch)."

So we're back on the insane carousel that is South Carolina's quarterback rotation, coach Steve Spurrier saying on Wednesday that Chris Smelley will probably play the majority of the next game and Stephen Garcia will back up.
Sure.
I'm not going to be surprised when I show up on Nov. 29 at Clemson and Garcia takes the majority of the snaps and makes the most things happen. I honestly can't tell anymore how serious Spurrier is about his quarterback plans, because we all know it takes just one hair out of place and that quarterback's gone and this quarterback's in.
What I find funny is Spurrier has made a history of lamenting and wistfully recalling the days of Syvelle "Cadillac" Newton, who ran USC's offense the most fluidly it's been under Spurrier. Couldn't go five press gatherings without Spurrier mentioning Newton at least once.
Now he's got Garcia, who's Newton with a better arm, and it's still not good enough.
Maybe it's good there's no availability the rest of the week. That way, I won't have to go to practice tomorrow, rush back to the house and say now Garcia's the guy who will not only start against Clemson, but he'll accept his position on Obama's cabinet just after.
Some other musings, from football and beyond ...
-- Looking at the scout team when it ran by just before practice let out on Wednesday, I jotted down some key numbers. Clemson's Aaron Kelly is being represented by Tori Childers; James Davis by Taylor Rank; Cullen Harper by Michael McQueeney; and my personal favorite, Jacoby Ford, he of the 4.25 40, by Scott Spurrier.
-- The USC women's basketball team lost 52-45 to Clemson on Wednesday in a tough game. There's nothing that tugs at the heart quite so much as a senior, in this case, Brionna Dickerson, crying after losing her last rivalry game. Good thing I'm such a jerk or I might start feeling some emotion.
-- Among the crowd at Colonial Life Arena to watch the girls play were men's hoopsters Branden Conrad, Dominique Archie, Mike Holmes and Sam Muldrow. Some of the football team -- Childers, Rodney Paulk, Moe Brown and assistant coach Ron Cooper -- also attended. Men's basketball coach Darrin Horn was also there and got to be interviewed on the video board. The only problem was he slipped and referred to it as the Colonial Center. Whoops.
-- I'm leaving Williams-Brice Stadium, right, and there's this kid and his mother standing there holding a football and a pen out. I explained to him I'm just one of those troublemaking muckraking reporters, not a player. The kid said that was OK and still held out the ball.
Wonder how much an authentic David Cloninger autograph on a football is worth?
