David Cloninger's Blog - Who Else?

That hurt

posted by David Cloninger, 3/15/2009 03:31:00 PM

Mississippi State's having quite a weekend, at South Carolina's expense.

The Bulldogs just won the SEC tournament championship, meaning they'll be dancing somewhere next week. That puts the Gamecocks' already-slim NCAA tournament hopes pretty firmly into the "See Ya" pile.

Coupled with the USC baseball team getting whiplash from all of the balls being hit over its heads, this weekend is about as nasty as the Columbia weather.

The way I see it, USC stood a slight shot of working that "Never denied a 10-win SEC team" angle into the NCAA tournament. Maybe the committee would be sympathetic (Mike Slive is involved, you know) and take the four 10-win teams (LSU, Tennessee, USC, Auburn).

But then MSU had to go and win after one of the nuttiest last 10 seconds of a ballgame I've ever seen, just when I was all set to kick back and relish in Duke's 17th ACC championship (eat it, Roy).

That puts MSU into the automatic spot. LSU and Tennessee are in as well. That may be it for the SEC.

Hate to be the prophet of doom, here, but the first thing I did was go hang my Colonial Life Arena parking pass on the rearview mirror.

I haven't often been wrong. I hope I am this time.

Talk to you in a couple of hours.
